Born in Montalcino in 1921, Nello Baricci, the visionary founder of the estate, made a significant impact on the world of winemaking. In 1955, fueled by a lifetime of savings, he acquired the Eastern slope of the Montosoli hill—a historically significant locale renowned for Sangiovese cultivation since the Middle Ages. Recognized as a Sangiovese Master when the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino was established in 1967, Baricci secured the coveted badge #1 and became a pioneering force by registering the first hectare of Brunello at the Chamber of Commerce in Siena. Introducing the inaugural Rosso di Montalcino in 1968 and the premier Brunello in 1971, he solidified his legacy. Today, under the stewardship of Nello's grandsons, Federico and Francesco, the estate's five hectares of vineyards exclusively reside in the Montosoli "Grand Cru" and are accompanied by a state-of-the-art cellar. Situated in the northern reaches of Montalcino, the Montosoli Cru boasts Pliocene marine-soil, contributing mineral richness to Sangiovese vines. Its rocky composition ensures proper drainage, crucial for optimal grape ripening. The micro-climate, characterized by higher altitude, shields against excessive heat and warm southern winds, with the cooler, humid Valdarbia region to the north extending further benefits. This distinctive climate yields a delayed harvest, resulting in wines with perfectly ripe tannins, well-balanced acidity, and a harmonious sugar concentration. The Rosso exudes freshness and fruitiness, while the Brunello showcases elegance, complexity, and smoothness, solidifying Baricci's enduring legacy.
