Jean de Pontac acquired the land in the 16th century, and by the 1660s "Ho Bryan" was being poured in London, where the diarist Samuel Pepys recorded tasting it in 1663. It was one of the first wines in the world sold under the name of its estate. In 1855 it was ranked a First Growth, the only red wine estate outside the Médoc to receive that honor. The American financier Clarence Dillon bought Haut-Brion in 1935, and his family still owns it today. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berries and plums mingled with burning embers, pencil shavings, violets and smoked black tea, it's full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a layered, elegantly muscular profile, its brooding core of fruit framed by a generous endowment of powdery tannin that tempers the ripeness of the vintage. Checking in at 14.7% alcohol, it's nonetheless more classically styled than the more flamboyant 2019 vintage or even the slowly maturing 2010 which I re-tasted alongside for context.

100 Pts Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0427/5837/files/ChateauLaMissionHaut-BrionPessac-Leognan2020.png?v=1706430505
copy-of-chateau-haut-brion-blanc-pessac-leognan-france-2018
Chateau Haut-Brion Blanc, Pessac-Leognan, France 2020

Very perfumed with floral, citrus and stone aromas, as well as hints of grapefruit.
