Hungary's Tokaji, with its illustrious history dating back to the recognition of Botrytis Cinerea, or the noble rot, in 1650, holds a remarkable legacy. By the 18th century, this exceptional wine had garnered recognition from the French and was introduced to the Russian imperial court, earning its reputation as 'the wine of kings and the king of wines.' However, during the communist regime, Tokaji's prestige dwindled, and its rich history became shrouded in obscurity. Yet, a new era began when skilled winemakers, including Bodegas Vega Sicilia in 1993, ventured to explore the region's potential.
Vega Sicilia acquired the esteemed Oremus property, comprising 115 hectares of 'first growth' vineyards and centuries-old underground cellars. These vineyards, predominantly on steep hillsides near Tolcsva in the Tokaj-Hegyalja appellation, are all classified as 'First Growth' based on the historic Szirmay classification of 1803. The ancient cellars, dating back to the 12th century, lie beneath the village of Tolcsva. Tokaj Master Andras Backsos crafts wines from traditional grape varieties, including Furmint, Hárslevelü, Zéta, and Muskat Lunel. The winemaking process is unique, involving the addition of botrytis-affected grape juice to fermenting must in Gonci casks, followed by a 24-hour maceration and extended oak aging, often up to a decade.
