Organic/Bio Called Pais in Chile and Mission in the USA, Criolla is the original grape brought to the Americas by the Spanish in the 16th Century. This is a stunning example, from some of Mendoza's coolest vineyards and vines planted in 1943. It's fermented in unlined concrete eggs with the skins and seeds to start and then finished after pressing back into the eggs. It's gloriously juicy and fresh and penetrating, with red plum and strawberry fruit and hints of fresh flowers and sweet spice. The fruit flavors really pop at the end as light tannins and gentle acidity clean things up and get you read for another sip. A joyful, if very rare, wine.
