The long growing season of 2016 allowed Michel Chapoutier to produce a particularly opulent white Châteauneuf. Mostly grenache blanc, with clairette for acidity, the wine is cloaked at first in smokiness, with a richness and a seashell scent that point it toward white Burgundy. But give it time in the glass: Plump quince flavors well up, with notes of toasted almonds and marzipan. It lasts, the flavors as layered as a croissant, with a tight, salty minerality that keeps the taste buds salivating.
