Taking in the 2017 Montefalco Sagrantino Colle Grimaldesco is a heady experience, but one that keeps me coming back to the glass. The bouquet is spicy, with masses of crushed blackberries laced with sour citrus and a hint of dusty dried violets to contrast. It floods the palate with textures of pure velvet, yet the feel is medium-bodied, as ripe red berries mingle with saline minerals to add balancing tension. Just when I think it’s going to clamp down hard, the 2017 instead provides a pleasant burst of inner sweetness that mingles with a saturation of tannins, helping to soften the blow. This is rockstar juice, but for the best effect, make sure to cellar it for a few years.
