Kopke’s legacy as a winegrower is intricately linked to the rich history of its location. The journey began in 1636 when Nicolau Kopkë traveled from Hamburg to Portugal, where he established himself as the Consul General of the Hanseatic League. This marked the beginning of Kopke's enduring story. By 1638, Kopke had shipped its first bottles of wine to Northern Europe. A pivotal moment occurred in 1781 when Kopke purchased a farm in the Douro Valley, transitioning from a wine-buying company to a prominent producer, with Port Wine becoming Kopke’s primary focus.
Located in the Upper Douro, a UNESCO Cultural World Heritage site and the world’s oldest demarcated wine region, Kopke found the perfect terroir for its wines. In 1922, Kopke acquired Quinta de São Luiz, an estate that has since been recognized as one of the most important in the region. The estate is revered for its superior soil quality and deep-rooted cultural traditions. Kopke cultivates several key grape varieties at this A-grade vineyard, including Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, and Tinta Cão, alongside smaller plots of Tinta Barroca and Souzão. The original vineyard, which includes the historic D. Pedro and Fonte Santa plots, continues to produce Kopke’s most iconic wines, representing the pinnacle of this distinguished terroir.
