The sole grower in this tiny subsect of the Valle d’Aosta who does not sell his grapes to the local coop, Danilo Thomain farms a single hectare of Petit Rouge surrounded by a dramatic alpine landscape with the peaks of the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc on the horizon. The vineyards of Enfer d’Arvier (Hell of Arvier) sits in a amphitheater carved from the mountainside where high altitudes and lots of sun exposure result in an intensely hot microclimate where Petit Rouge thrives and is where the region derives its name from. Medium bodied with a fruit forward, tart profile reminiscent of Gamay but with a distinctly rustic edge of alpine scrub and sandpaper tannins that provide enough structure for this wine to age gracefully.
