Bodegas Contador's history began in 1995, when Benjamin Romeo purchased an ancient cave situated underneath the Castle of San Vicente de la Sonsierra. He produced his first Contador vintage in 1999, and in 2004 and 2005, both of these vintages received a perfect 100-point score from Robert Parker, a renowned American wine critic. These ratings were the first and second 100-point ratings ever awarded to Spanish wine.

In 2008, on the summer solstice, Benjamin inaugurated his winery, as depicted in the accompanying image. The winery's terraces facilitate the natural movement of fruit and wine via gravity throughout the vinification process. Every stage of the growing cycle places a premium on respecting the vine and the land. Following mother nature's lead, every detail becomes significant, including the selection of Spanish cork trees for bottling.
