Hacienda Araucano is the Chilean estate of François Lurton, from one of Bordeaux's best known winemaking families. François and his brother Jacques had been making wine in Chile since 1992, and in 2000 they bought 200 hectares in Lolol, in the west of the Colchagua Valley, joining seven old farms into one property on land that had never been planted with vines. Today the estate has 28 hectares of vineyard near the Coastal mountain range, farmed organically, and Lolol has become one of the most sought-after corners of Colchagua.

| Alka Carmenère | The top Carmenère | The estate's top Carmenère, from Chile's signature grape: deep and powerful, with dark berries, eucalyptus and black pepper, firm ripe tannins and a long, spicy finish. |
| Clos de Lolol | The estate red blend | Carmenère, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot from the best plots, hand harvested, each variety fermented separately in cement and aged in French oak. |
| Humo Blanco | Organic varietal wines | Single-grape wines that show what Lolol does with each variety: Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Carmenère, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. |
| l'Atelier | Small-batch wines | The estate's small-batch range: a Pet Nat sparkling wine, Naranjo, a skin-contact orange wine of Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, and a Syrah Viognier. |

Lolol sits in the western part of the Colchagua Valley, closer to the Pacific than the valley floor, where cooler conditions and poor soils slow ripening. That is why the Lurtons chose it: Cabernet and Carmenère keep their freshness and herbal lift, and cooler-climate grapes like Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc keep bright acidity. The result is Chilean wine with more tension and less heaviness than many warmer sites produce.
Serve Gran Araucano, Alka and Clos de Lolol at 60 to 65°F, and decant young bottles for an hour. They are made for grilled steak, lamb, venison and Chilean or Argentine asado. Humo Blanco Carmenère and Cabernet Franc work with empanadas, roast chicken and pork. Serve the Sauvignon Blanc and Pet Nat well chilled with ceviche, oysters and salads, and the Naranjo slightly cool with spiced dishes, cured meats and aged cheeses.
