Raul Perez El Pecado Mencia, Ribeira Sacra, Spain 2021
El Pecado — "the sin" — was Raúl Pérez's first wine from Ribeira Sacra, and it remains one of his rarest and most sought-after reds. The fruit comes from the Capeliños vineyard, an ancient, vertiginous parcel on the steep schist slopes above the Sil river, farmed by the Guímaro family. Mostly Mencía, braided with old field-blend Bastardo, Garnacha Tintorera, Caiño, and Brancellao, it shows perfumed mineral, dried flowers, and aromatic herbs before air coaxes out ripe black fruit, currant, and spiced raspberry. Explosive and full of energy on the palate, elegant and complex, with very fine tannins and a long, clean finish.
97 points from Luis Gutiérrez. → 1,200 bottles made. → Drinking beautifully now through 2040. This is allocation wine, not shelf wine.
