2023 | Château Carbonnieux Blanc | Pessac-Léognan | France
The benchmark dry white Bordeaux — a Cru Classé from a 13th-century estate, 94 points.
Château Carbonnieux is one of Bordeaux's oldest estates, founded by Benedictine monks in the 13th century and classified Cru Classé de Graves in 1959. Unusually for Bordeaux, it's most famous for its white. The Perrin family has run it since 1956. The 2023 is 65% Sauvignon Blanc and 35% Sémillon, from a mosaic of clay-limestone and Günzian gravel. James Suckling gave it 94 points, Decanter 93, and it earned 2 stars in the Guide Hachette 2026.

Lilac and hawthorn florals opening to lemon, grapefruit and passion fruit, with a fresh attack, crisp acidity and a dense, fleshy, citrus-marked finish. Translation: a fresh, precise cru-classé white — floral and citrus aromatics over a dense, fleshy palate with real tension and a saline close. Lovely now, and built to gain for a decade.
A Grand Cru Classé white Bordeaux. Exactly the bottle for shellfish, fish in cream sauce, white meats, or fine cheese.
