Chateau Unang Ventoux Rouge, Rhone, France 2019
Chateau Unang Ventoux Rouge, Rhone, France 2019
16.5/20, Jancis Robinson (Tamlyn Currin)
Château Unang is a family-owned, certified-organic estate in the Ventoux — the value-rich southern Rhône appellation in the shadow of Mont Ventoux, next door to Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas. The 2019 Rouge is mostly Grenache with Syrah and Cinsault, hand-harvested from high, east-facing vineyards on sandy soils over limestone, and fermented cool in tank with no oak to keep the fruit pure and vibrant.
Immensely floral and lifted aromatically, it's full of deliciously pure black fruit — damson jam, caraway spice and a dash of paprika, with a touch of tea-leaf chewiness and a whisper of toffee. Curvy, generous and super-ripe, but kept honest by well-controlled tannins and pert acidity. As Jancis Robinson's Tamlyn Currin put it, it's "very, very easy to love and enjoy" — and a genuine good-value find. A perfect, characterful everyday Rhône red.
Certified organic. Drink now through 2025. Lovely with grilled lamb, roast chicken, ratatouille, charcuterie and herbed Mediterranean dishes.
