2022 | Kühling-Gillot Chardonnay Réserve | Rheinhessen | Germany
Biodynamic German Chardonnay from a Rheinhessen icon — barrel-fermented, mineral, and seriously underpriced.
Kühling-Gillot, run by Carolin Spanier-Gillot and H.O. Spanier, is one of Germany's most celebrated estates — VDP members farming the legendary Roter Hang biodynamically since 2005. Their Chardonnay Réserve comes from ~20-year-old vines on calcareous marl and loess near Laubenheim, spontaneously fermented in tonneaux and matured on the lees. Clear, deep and finely mineral.
Biodynamic barrel-fermented German Chardonnay from a cult estate is a discovery. Mineral, exotic and precise → a VDP star's Chardonnay → at $40.99 you're drinking serious German Burgundy-variety wine.
- 100% Chardonnay
- Rheinhessen, Germany — Laubenheim calcareous marl and loess
- Kühling-Gillot — VDP; organic/biodynamic since 2005
- Spontaneous ferment in tonneaux; lees aging
Ripe orchard and exotic fruit over a clear, deep, finely mineral core with subtle spice and filigreed acidity. Translation: textured but precise German Chardonnay — yellow fruit and spice with a stony, saline cut; far more Burgundy than Germany in spirit.
Biodynamic Chardonnay from a Rheinhessen icon. Exactly the white for those who love serious, mineral Chardonnay from unexpected places.
