2009 | Mercouri Estate "Chortais" (500ml) | Peloponnese | Greece
A rare Greek sweet red from a historic Peloponnese estate — sun-dried Mavrodaphne, five years in cask, caramel and chocolate.
Mercouri Estate is a historic family domaine (founded 1864) on the western coast of the Peloponnese, near Ancient Olympia. "Chortais" — named for the bay by the estate — is their natural sweet dessert red: 55% Mavrodaphne and 45% Korinthiaki (the Corinth currant grape), semi-sun-dried, then matured five years in oak with carefully controlled oxidation. This is the aged 2009, in the 500ml format.
A cask-aged Greek sweet red like this is a rare, serious dessert wine. Mavrodaphne-based, sun-dried, five years in oak → caramel, chocolate, velvety → you're drinking a Greek dessert classic.
