Alto Adige Wine Buyer's Guide: Italy's Alpine Whites and Reds
Alto Adige, also called Südtirol or South Tyrol, is Italy's northernmost wine region, a valley system in the Dolomites along the Adige river around Bolzano. It belonged to Austria until after the First World War, so labels often appear in both Italian and German. Mountain vineyards, warm sunny days and cold nights give wines of rare purity: precise Pinot Grigio and Pinot Bianco, aromatic Gewürztraminer and Kerner, and light-to-dark reds from Schiava, Lagrein and Pinot Nero. This guide explains the grapes, the subregions and which bottles to buy.
I've visited the Dolomites, and the mountains explain a lot about these wines. If you've only had Pinot Grigio as a simple party wine, Alto Adige is where it shows what it can really be.

Why Alto Adige Wine Tastes the Way It Does
Alto Adige sits south of the main Alpine ridge, so the mountains block cold northern air while the valleys trap sun and warmth during the day. Vineyards climb from the valley floor to high on the slopes, and nights are cold. That combination ripens grapes fully while keeping their acidity and aroma, which is why the region's wines taste both ripe and crisp.
Much of the wine is made by historic cooperative wineries, called Kellerei in German and Cantina in Italian, where hundreds of small growers bring their grapes to a shared cellar. In Alto Adige these cooperatives are among the best producers in Italy, not bulk operations. Names like Cantina Terlano, Cantina Tramin, Kurtatsch and Andrian appear alongside family estates like Elena Walch, Hofstätter, Alois Lageder and Manincor.
The Grapes of Alto Adige
White Grapes
-
Pinot Grigio: here it has real concentration, with pear, apple and mineral notes. A completely different wine from mass-market Pinot Grigio.
-
Pinot Bianco (Weissburgunder): subtle, creamy and very age-worthy; a local favorite.
-
Gewürztraminer: named after Tramin (Termeno), a village in the south of the region. Intensely aromatic, with lychee, rose and spice, usually made dry here.
-
Kerner, Sylvaner and Müller-Thurgau: aromatic, high-acid whites from the cooler northern valleys, especially Valle Isarco.
-
Sauvignon and Chardonnay: precise, mineral styles, with Terlano especially famous for whites that age for decades.
Red Grapes
-
Schiava (Vernatsch): the traditional red: pale, light-bodied, with cherry, almond and violet. St. Magdalener (Santa Maddalena), from the hills around Bolzano, is Schiava with a little Lagrein.
-
Lagrein: a native grape from around Bolzano, deep in color with plum, blackberry, violet and dark chocolate, but soft, gentle tannin.
-
Pinot Nero (Blauburgunder): some of Italy's finest Pinot Noir, fresh and elegant, especially from higher sites.
Key Subregions
-
Valle Isarco (Eisacktal): the northernmost and coolest area, home to the monastery of Novacella; crisp, aromatic whites like Kerner, Sylvaner and Grüner Veltliner.
-
Terlano (Terlan): northwest of Bolzano, famous for long-lived whites from porphyry soils.
-
Bolzano and Santa Maddalena: the warm basin around the regional capital, home of Lagrein and St. Magdalener.
-
Oltradige (Überetsch): the plateau around Appiano and Caldaro, with Lake Caldaro; whites, Pinot Nero and Schiava.
-
Bassa Atesina (Unterland): the warmer south, including Termeno (Tramin) and Cortaccia (Kurtatsch); Gewürztraminer and fuller reds.

Frequently Asked Questions About Alto Adige Wine
Where is Alto Adige?
Alto Adige, also called Südtirol or South Tyrol, is Italy's northernmost wine region, in the Dolomites around the city of Bolzano, bordering Austria and Switzerland.
Why are Alto Adige labels in German and Italian?
The region was part of Austria until after the First World War, and both German and Italian are official languages today, so many labels use both names, such as Kellerei and Cantina.
What grapes are grown in Alto Adige?
Mostly whites: Pinot Grigio, Pinot Bianco, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Gewürztraminer and Kerner. The main reds are Schiava, Lagrein and Pinot Nero.
Is Alto Adige Pinot Grigio better than regular Pinot Grigio?
Generally, yes. Mountain vineyards, low yields and serious producers give Alto Adige Pinot Grigio more concentration and minerality than mass-market versions, while staying crisp and fresh.
What is Lagrein?
Lagrein is a native red grape from around Bolzano. It makes deeply colored wines with plum, blackberry and violet, but with soft, approachable tannin.
What is Schiava or St. Magdalener?
Schiava, called Vernatsch in German, is Alto Adige's traditional light red. St. Magdalener is a Schiava-based wine, with a little Lagrein, from the hills around Bolzano. Both are best served slightly chilled.
Can Alto Adige whites age?
Yes. Top whites, especially from Terlano and Pinot Bianco and Chardonnay Riserva bottlings, can develop for ten years or more.
Is Gewürztraminer from Alto Adige sweet?
Most Alto Adige Gewürztraminer is made dry. It smells sweet, with lychee and rose, but finishes dry and fresh.
