Bodega Marañones makes some of Spain's most elegant Garnacha: old vines on granite in the Sierra de Gredos, west of Madrid, made by Fernando García of Comando G. Fresh, floral and mineral, these are Garnachas that drink like fine Burgundy.

Bodega Marañones: Garnacha from the Sierra de Gredos

Bodega Marañones is one of the producers behind the rise of Spain's most exciting new wine region, the Sierra de Gredos west of Madrid. Led by winemaker Fernando García, also co-founder of the cult Gredos project Comando G, Marañones farms old Garnacha and the local white grape Albillo Real on granite slopes around San Martín de Valdeiglesias. The wines are fresh, floral and transparent: Garnacha that drinks more like fine Burgundy than the ripe, heavy Garnacha many people expect.

    The Wines of Bodega Marañones

    • Treinta Mil Maravedíes: The estate's signature red and the best introduction to Gredos Garnacha. Flowers and luscious fruit, with the imprint of granite in a firm, vibrant texture and surprising depth and length. Available by the half case.
    • Marañones: The estate red, richer and riper than many Gredos wines. Iron, plum, cherry and herbs, with firm, tight-grained tannins and a long finish.
    • Labros: Garnacha with dried strawberry, cherry and floral notes, ultra-fine tannins and a long, fresh finish.
    • Picarana: The estate white, made from Albillo Real, the traditional white grape of the Sierra de Gredos.

Vintages and availability change often. Every Marañones wine currently in stock is listed above, and new arrivals appear here automatically.

Why Sierra de Gredos Garnacha Is Different

The Sierra de Gredos is a mountain range straddling Madrid, Ávila and Toledo. Its old Garnacha vines grow at high altitude on poor granite and sand, with cold nights and big temperature swings. For decades the grapes went into bulk wine. In the 2000s a small group of growers, including Fernando García and Daniel Landi of Comando G, began picking earlier and making light-handed wines that show the place. The result is Garnacha with red fruit, flowers, herbs and a stony freshness, often compared to Grenache from Châteauneuf-du-Pape's best sites or to red Burgundy.

    Food Pairing and Serving

Serve Marañones reds slightly cool, at 58 to 62°F, in a Burgundy glass. Their freshness and fine tannins work with roast lamb, grilled pork, mushroom dishes, charcuterie and roast chicken. Picarana is excellent with roast fish, poultry and aged cheeses.
