The 2018 Mezcla Tinta Rhu from Alcohuaz, Elqui, is a blend of 80% Syrah, 12% Petite Sirah and 8% Garnacha, aged for 32 months in foudres. Purple in the glass. The exotic, precise nose features layers of jerky and blackberry aromas, plus spice, pepper and tomato leaf, all kept in a refined cigar box. In the mouth, this is silky and energetic, with very delicate, gently grippy tannins. The overall austerity enhances the wine’s virtues, while the flavors last all the way through to the lengthy finish. Will improve in the bottle.
