This is one of the Willamette Valley’s most storied vineyards and has been the source of some of the United States’ best Pinot Noirs since soon after Dick Shea began planting his 200-acre site, a relatively early entrant into the Yamhill-Carlton appellation, in 1989. Today, 159 of those acres are under vine, 149 of them to Pinot Noir, and the rest to Chardonnay. The list of Shea’s clients is a literal who’s who of Oregon wineries and has been for years. In more vintages than not, I have found that those producers’ best bottling is from Shea. In 1996, Shea started bottling his own wines, made from his own fruit and often under individual block designations, as well as blends from across his many plantings. The 2019s here are lovely wines, showing noteworthy fruit intensity and depth, combined with energy and sharp definition. The oak signature is there, but not at all excessive for Pinot Noir at such an early stage of its development, and from an excellent year to boot.
